Sainath's Advice on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 :

Some years back, during the client-server boom, windows based applications were in high demand. In particular, the Visual Basic - Oracle combination was very popular. With the maturing of browser based technologies like Asp.Net this has reduced. However, in recent times there has been an upsurge in demand for Windows based applcations using WPF in particular. This is mainly due to the push from Microsoft towards building rich UIs. Also, for complex applications like a stock trading application which is used only within the organization intranet, going down the Windows route using WPF may be a better option.

Not many people are adept at using WPF at this juncture, which makes it a relative niche. Please remember the pros and cons of working  in a niche area - the quality of opportunities and the associated pay prospects is more. At the same time, the overall number of assignments in the niche area will be lower than browser based projects. It is like any other niche area like data warehousing, etc.
Based on this information you can take a decision.
