Hi Anu...

Web Services can be created when you want to expose any of your application functionality as a service that can be consumed by any third party application. This applicable can be inhouse or outside world application built on any platform (.net, java or php).

As web service communicates via SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol), a kind of XML so it is not stopped by Firewall so the communication is effective.

Read more about creating and consuming web service at http://www.dotnetfunda.com/articles/article879-how-to-create-consume-web-service-the-simplest-way.aspx

For more web service related articles, click http://www.dotnetfunda.com/search/Search.aspx?q=web%20service

Now a days, instead of web service you can opt for WCF service as it has a lot of benefits over web service.

Thanks
