SQL2008 Express repair failing & SP1 installation failure.

Yesterday I spent all day trying to upgrade sql 2008 express edition, which I use as a backend for Adminstudio 9.5, at one point I almost totally pooched the box. I did a system restore and then had to do a repair on each component. Now I ran the main executable to do a full repair and it runs and at some point about 3 quarters of the way through I get a error message relating to message id 50000 and setup.rll. The only thing I could find was a knowledgebase article referring to copying over a server and tools folder. Well in the Express Edition there is no Server folder in the install files. All I am trying to do is get 2008 current and I can't. The two parts that fail looking in the logs relate to database engine and replication. The repair finishes but it says part of it failed.
