question on authentication used in change password pages.

I have noticed in change password pages or even in login registration pages asking the user to type "The following given words mentioned in the textbox"
displaying some characters,sp characters or numerals. and as the user types it correctly it goes on to the next step.. if the user by mistake types the letters wrongly it does not allow them to the next step..

This is so strange, how can this provide the authentication. the letters mentioned in the textbox will be very clear 99%. HOW is this going to provide authentication to the user login /password ?

If you see, this is something like CAPTCHA images that you see in many sites. Its actually prevents some programs to send data as the images are dynamically generated by the website. and it will be different for every request.
