hi friend's,
During installation of any operating system we need a serial key.
can any one tell me how this key is checked.
Is there any key file stored in installation disk or what.
somebodies tell me that when you enter the CD-key it is checked by an algorithm and not against a set of keys.
Is it correct. if yes then tell me how an algorithm is used to check the key.

In windows operating system , software keys are stored in Registry. During installation each software will check the registry have serial no. or not.

In Dot Net Application we can read the Registry values like this

Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey key;
key = Microsoft.Win32.Registry.CurrentUser.OpenSubKey("Muhil Software");
String s = (String)key.GetValue("Muhil");

Do you want to know how to create key and retrieve information from Registry? Please go through the below link
