Form authentication

I wants to devlope a web appliction. I wants to learn form authentication from basics in detail. So please help me out....

First you must have a Table in your Database that stores the username and password, and in your Form you will be counting the records that has that username and password matching. and there is 1 record matching then the user has logged in else , they receive something like

"login faild"
