Introduction
Welcome come again to another review of Kinect for windows book. You have noticed that It is been long since I wrote an article. It is because I am working on my first commercial Kinect application that I am planning to release this summer. Today I am reviewing the book by Clemente Giorio and Massimo Fascinari titled “Kinect in Motion-Audio and Visual Tracking
by Example”
Chapter 1
The Author presented chapter one as expected. He introduced
the reader to the device and explained then essential parts of the device. Like
any other author I have reviewed his work , he did not number his image or
rather diagrams so that he can refer to them at a later stage in the book. When
referring to certain parts of the device, one need to page and go back to see
what the author is referring to. Placing each part of the diagram with its title
would be a better approach next time when writing a book.
All the parts of the device were explained clearly and
vividly.
Chapter 2
In chapter 2 the author concentrated on using depth data and
also asynchronously processing the data without locking the interaction on the
UI which is a performance boost. A good demonstration.
Chapter 3
In this Chapter the
author looked at skeleton tracking. The author presented clear diagrams. I did
not get much of gestures as it has been coupled with the same chapter as the
skeleton tracking. I feel that the gestures deserves their own chapter as they
form an important part of the application.
Chapter 4
In this Chapter the author presented the speech recognition.
This subject is not a complicated subject and in this book it was also handled well,
the examples are simple to understand.
The Author extended the chapter with some audio stuff.
Conclusion
I review books not for the sake of promoting it, but for the
sake of giving applaud the good work and also to note the parts where the
author can improve if he may decide to write again.
These are my findings on this book and I feel like the book
was too short, maybe it is because the subject of Kinect has more avenues that
can be explored. This ends in Chapter 4, for more it’s not enough and that is
not good enough. Few important aspects was presented, it is not a good book for
a beginner. A lot have been left out in this book. I am also disappointed that
the book is a collaboration but it only gave us few things we can think about.
Some examples were not that clear, I had to skip them while reading the book.
