how to catch short date from a database

hello
i have the following statement
Dim sql1 As String = " select * from [purchases] WHERE pur_date = '" + DateTimePicker1.Text + "' "
my DateTimePicker1 have this date format MM/DD/YYYY
and my the column pu_date have this format MM/DD/YYYY ss:mm:hh
time is saved in my database like this "6/20/2013 9:57 PM"
in my sql statement when i select i want the pur_date to read only this format (MM/DD/YYYY) in order to compare with the datetimepicker1
how could i do this?
