$select OPERATOR ERROR

Hi,
I am trying to restrict the returned properties from my svc service using the $select operator but am receiving the following error:


"The query parameter '$select' begins with a system-reserved '$' character but is not recognized."


Could someone please shed some light about what is wrong?


This is the query I am using:
http://localhost:3316/AdoNetDemo/MarsService.svc/tblCompany/?$select=CompanyId, CompanyTypeId, CompanyName
