I've got an ASP page w/ a number of controls that I've been using the standard validators on.  However, through the page I also need to perform CRUD operations, so I need to do exception handling on the database commands.  If I catch an exception, is there a common way to alert the user to this fact since this happens on the server?  I assume I could add a error label to the page to display a message that way, but then it would be inconsistent from the rest of the validation messages.  For cosistency, I could do my own validation server side and add both control and exception errors to a shared error string.
Any advice on what the best practices are to display errors for both standard controls and exceptions?
Also, since the standard validators get performed server-side regardless, is it common practice to still use client-side validation too?
