How to pass data between layers in N-Layer application

Dear all,
What are the best patterns availble to pass data in between layers in a N-Layer Application ie. Take an example if i have a application with following layers.
View--> Service-->Domain-->Persistance(ORM)
In view i have viewModels, Service layer i have serviceModel-- Both Domain & Persistance Sharing  Domain Model, My doubt is how can i pass between each layers.. expecting some example and some patterns practise
