how to return a single value

I am making sure progress with ASP.Net.  Returning large data sets is incredibly easy with the great controls available.  What is NOT clear at all, however, is how to return a single value WITHOUT using one of the multi-row type controls.
 
Let's say inside an asp:SqlDataSource, I

"SELECT FullName FROM table1 WHERE ID=1"
This returns exactly ONE value (a text string) from the DB.
How do I display that value on an ASPX page WITHOUT a datalist, grid, repeater, etc?
 
I have tried things like <%# Eval("table1.FullName")%> to no avail.  [Actually that works, but ONLY inside, for example, the <ItemTemplate> of a control like <asp:DataList>
 
Surely there is a way.  Thanks in advance for your help.
