cant add control nopCommerce

I am using nopCommerce which is a aspx ecommerce website.
For some reason you cant add controls to aspx pages and make them work like normal. there is no error but the controls dont do anything.
In default.aspx I add a button control and a label to test to see if controls can be added.

In the code behind I cant click a button and get the below code to work. there is no error but no click event to find.
