polling data from database in every N number of time. How?

Hi,
Is there any way to have a polling to the database every N number of time...
I used pagemethods to poll, if there's a new data. then i will return it true.
is there any much efficient way to do this? too much query will STRESS the server... much more likely the sqlcachedependency, BUT how?
