drop down selected item

I was sure that if i wrote
  
1 DropDownList month = new DropDownList();
2 for (int q = 1; q < 13; q++)
3 {
4
5 month.Items.Add(Convert.ToString(q));
6 }
7 month.SelectedItem.Value = 5;
 

 
then in the list 5 would be selected in the dropdown.
 
But its not...
 
What am i doing wrong?
