search function on asp.net

hi guys

wondering if you can point me in the right direction here.
What controls are needed to write something similar to the search function on the asp.net site. (not the forums)
I like the way the panel appears over the page that was already there, and then displays dynamic data. i thought it might be the ajax updatepanel but i cant see how to draw the panel on a mouse click...

or something like this, the way the images load and the background goes dark

Thanks for any help
