Literal Controls and Code Behind

I'm trying to build a new feature for a site that was built on 1.1 with vb. I need to set the text value for two literal controls with a function.
When I put: LiteralBegin.Text = "text text text text" it is giving me a build error saying that LiteralBegin is not declared?
How do I work with Literal controls on the .ascx from the code behind file?
