webservice returns entire page's html instead of the string "hello"

I have a webservice that i am invoking from javascrip wiht pagemethods.

when i invoke this on my local server the webservice returns the entire pages's html instead of the text "hello",

when i run it on my website ist works as expected. why is this?? what is happening ?
