Web Services Problem

I am having a problem with a website.  I am moving the site to a windows 2003 server that has only been previously used with NET 2.0.  I installed the 3.5 assemblies from microsoft.com, and then tried to install 3.0 (error newer version installed).  When I try and launch the site all the serverside scripting works (thus the data connection is valid), but when I try AJAX services calls, I get the failure function instead.  This works from the development machine, so I feel I missed something that needs installed.  What have I missed?  The error message was "There was an error processing your request".
