Adding buttons to a gridview programatically

Here's my problem:

 I pull some rows from a database, and the 'active' field contains either a "1" or a "2".  I want to replace the value there with a button (activate or deactivate) based on that value.  That part is working fine.

However, when it comes time to click the button, the events for the buttons do not fire. (actually, what happens is the buttons disappear from the grid, and the database is not updated.)

 Can anyone help me out?
