enums

I have a value of "RESEARCH" and "GOAL" in my session variable. I need to call different stored procedures based on the value of the session variable so
If (session[type] ="RESEARCH")
   then call storedprocedure x
else if ?(sesion[type]="GOAL"]
  then call stored proc y
I am thinking to decalre them in enum, both Goal and research. Somone was telling me that way the code will lokk neater and less lines of code, but I could not figure out how the code will look neater by declaring an enum. I was wondering if someone can help me creating the enum and showing me how the code will look neater that way.
