i have a User table.. i have 2 types of users - employees and customers.. both the employees and customers have userid (incremental autogenerated identity) in the User table..
i can track the type of user in 2 ways
  - add a Char(1) field and populate it with values E or C ..
  - add another table UserType with an identity primary key and a field which stores the UserType and link to this table using a foreign key..
new user types will not be added dynamically by users of the application
i think option 1 is better than option 2 because even if another type of user comes in at a later stage that user type can be given another code and the system will continue to work.. i need your comments and suggestions on this.. any advantage in using option 2?
