creating keys for the client and server using OpenSSL/Keytool

I am using openSSL and java keystore to encrypt and sign data going between a web service and client. most of the examples I have read just talk about making the key/cert for the client and server, but I have multiple clients, how will my web service know which one it is talking to so it can encrypt the data back with the right private key?
