How do I use json WHERE clause?

Greetings Experts,
I am using the following json script to return results from the db.
query.where = "CONTEST = '" + control.innerHTML + "' and " + electionResutlsConfig[cResultIndex].idField + " is not null"; The code works for the most part.
The only problem is that if the value has space or dash, it won't work.
Right now, I have values that look like the following:
32 - MARKET - 5 -M
In SQL Server, you would wrap the fieldname called CONTEST with [] but I am not sure how to use it in json.
