I have successfully implemented membership authentication in my web application using a SQL Server data store.
I have recently added a status control to my master page so that I can display a sign in/sign out text and image depending upon whether or not the user has been authenticated.  As you cannot use both text and images with a login status control I have used text in the login status control to display sign in or sign out.
I have added an image control then handled the IsAuthenticated property  in the code behind to display the correct image depending upon whether or not the user has successfully logged in.  Is it the correct approach to use HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.IsAuthenticated with a membership login system?
One final question.  With memberships are cookies still used?  I'm a bit confused about which parts of forms authentication are utilised with membership authentication.

Many Thanks ...
