I have a site with a master / content pages One one content page I have a content place holders (CPH). In the 1st CPH I have a panel that serves as a ModalPopup using the ModalPopupExtender control. The contents of the popup panel is an UpdatePanel that gets updated as needed to display info the user. The UpdatePanel also contains a Save LinkButton (posts back to the server) and Cancel LinkButton (closes the modal popup). In the second CPH I have a DetailsView that gets bound when Not Page.IsPostBack. During the DataBound event of the DetailsView I inspect a Session variable. Based on this session variable I update the contents of the 1st CPH's UPdatePanel and Show the modal ...
