Details view completely ignores validation on insert

I am trying to validate a details view during insert. The control is loaded in insert mode. When I click insert, it does the insert completely ignoring the validation controls. I have tried many things, and even replaced the DNN (DotNetNuke) textboxes with stand asp textboxes. I have also tried other validation controls and setup the validation summary in a variety of ways. Nothing.
BTW, I am just trying validate 'Title' before I bother writing validation for the other fields.
Any ideas?
