i have been using generics to return lists to bind object data sources to in a project.  however i am having some issues getting paging and filtering to work.

I understand that if i remove these generics lists and turn them to data tables the filtering and paging will work automatically.  I want to know if there is a performance difference between binding these custom lists as opposed to data tables and data sets.  I chose to use Lists of custom objects rather than DataTables just for education only but before i go changing my DAL back to returning tables instead of lists i just wanted to know best practices or performance differences?  It seems to me using data tables is going to reduce a lot of code i will have to do (especially to enable paging, etc) so what is the benefits of using custom lists instead?

thanks in advance,
