response.write and httpwebrequest

both are not working, eventually i want to invoke a traditional .asp script with the httpWebRequest, i tried that with a get but the target script evidently was never invoked. so, for now, i  copied an easy example from a tutorial,
http://www.worldofasp.net/tut/WebRequest/Working_with_HttpWebRequest_and_HttpWebResponse_in_ASPNET_114.aspx
but i'm not getting any text back from the target site, and no error messages either, and nothing rendered back from any of the response.writes
i'm missing something very basic here?
