Securing a File Upload Folder

I have an ASP.NET 1.1 application that allows users to upload files to
a particular folder.  The application allows anonymous
access.  The files are XML data files that the application uses to
save and load data.  What is the best way for me to secure this
folder to guard against malicious file uploads?  Currently the
folder that holds the file uploads is under the root of the
application.  I am looking for any best practices so that I can
reduce the risk as much as possible.
