custom validator, client script, error doesnt show in summary

Hi All.
I have a custom validator on the page, with client script, but it doesnt show in the summary. It goes in the javascript function and goes to the correct line i.e. args.isValid=false; but still nothing.
Should having a script manager on the page make a difference to this?
 Help please
