Retrieving bit value from gridview asp:checkboxField

Hi!
I have a gridview in my database that links to a sql back end.  I want to populate some checkboxes on my form based on which row is selected in my gridview.  
I have a GridViewRow object I am using declared like so:
Dim row As GridViewRow = GridView1.SelectedRow
I think want to set my check boxes on my form to equal the checkboxes in my gridview.  The gridview column is declared as gridview asp:checkboxField.  
Right now I've tried ckBxAuto.Checked = CBool(row.Cells(9).Text)
The 9th cell on my gridview is a bit type.  What would be the best way to retrieve this and then update my form checkBox on my form?
