I'm currently using the standard profile to store some simple additional user data (company name, telephone number) for my site which uses ASP.NET 2.0 standard membership and role providers with forms-based authentication.   I need to add quite a lot more user-related data and am wondering about the best way to do it.
One drawback to the standard profile provider as I see it is that it seems to require quite a few DB hits to retrieve user, membership, profile and role information.  I notice that the speed is very dependant on bandwidth between DB and webserver - for example, running on the ASP.NET test server locally connected to my hosting co's MSSQL server via 1Mb/s ADSL, a page which causes a fetch of membership, role and profile info of all 120 users on the site takes about 2m30s to complete.  Another drawback is that I can't easily do queries like "fetch all users where a certain profile flag is true" in a scalable way.
