How to get last insert id?

Hi all,
I'm a long-standing PHP developer, with one legacy site I have to service for a large client, which is ASP.NET.
I am having no fun at all.
I'd really like a bit of help with something that should be easy, but isn't. I just want to pull out the ID of the last inserted record. I've been googling all afternoon but nothing works.
This is as far as I've got:
