Passing Parameter in URL problem

 Hello all:
 I would like to pass parameters in the URL to the same page in order to change the record in my database.  I have a button, textbox and gridview on my page.  I have an autonumber field in my database with job 1, 2 etc.  I would like to pass the number to the url string and than be able to show the record from that page.  The code I have is not working.  I am using a gridview to test my app but it is not showing anything.  I use        
strQuery = "SELECT * FROM Reference WHERE jobNo = " & Page.Request.QueryString("id") & ""
I know my database connection is working because I have tested it by just passing a number in a retrieving a row.
