character count in textbox

I am trying to figure out how to count characters in textbox as a user is typing.  I Have restricted the lenght of the textbox to 1000 characters, but as a person is typing in this box I would like to have a label below box that will count the characters as they type.  Is there some javascript code that could accomplish this?
