Not sure if I should use query string???

I have a dropdownlist and in the list the items all have a number and description like this  ' MMA#245 Amoroso Rolls'  


Then I have a Add Item button which adds that selected dropdown item in a Textbox.  I want to try to find a way to only add the MMA#245 to that textbox field and not bring the description down 'Amoroso Rolls'.    Would I accomplish that using a query string??
