The company I work for has recently become SOx compliant and we are currently working on updating security to match the new development roles in I.T. For example, developers no longer can have access to production environments or those connection strings. When a program is in development it points to the development connection string(gldev). When it is ready for testing, it is published on our Web Test server and points to the test version of the database (gltest). Then, after testing is finished and its ready for production it is once again moved from Web Test server to the production Web Server and once again we have to manually change our connection string to point to the production database(glprod).
