Order TimePeriod fields (ex: December 2012)

using asp.net/vb.net 2008
ok, I know this is a whacky one but I am being returned a varchar(25) field from a database that is called "TimePeriod" and the values are stored as <MonthName Year>
<sampleValues>
September 2011
July 2012
</sampleValues>
When the page loads I am getting a distinct list of TimePeriods and I need to load the current month and year.  if that time period does not exist then I need to load the next month and year (example for this month the next would be November 2012).
any way to do this without writing a massive program?
I am thinking of doing something like this but not sure if it accepts "Month FullYear"
