Default DropDonwList to null

I have a drop down list the is bound to a query (select name from a table).  I want to default it to null when the page is loaded but it is defaulting to the first name in the list.  How do I accomplish that?
I tried setting the control to null onload on the VB side but null is not valid for the query.
