We are running some AJAX enabled WCF Services using ASP's configuration free magic:

Factory="System.ServiceModel.Activation.WebScriptServiceHostFactory"
%>
Now we have to increase MaxStringContentLength and that seems to require of a full blown <system.serviceModel> node in web.config ? and all the configuration free magic is gone.
Our current setup is:
IIS 6 with Windows authentication only (no anonymous access allowed)
service has to impersonate the caller's identity (via [OperationBehavior(Impersonation = ImpersonationOption.Required)])
no transport security (SSL) available
The automagically configured service works just fine in this scenario, but we were not able to reproduce its behavior/configuration manually.
