Problem with delete button inside of Repeater

I have a repreater with a delete button assigned for each record. It works fine when I create a new record but when I come back in edit mode I click the button the following event never gets fired:
protected void MyRepeater_ItemCommand(object source, RepeaterCommandEventArgs e)
{
 //delete button code here
}
I am not sure why this event is not getting fired in edit mode and I am at a loss for finding a work around.
