DropDownList

 I have two dropdownlists 
DropDownCategory and DropDownState they are contained within a tablerow.  The issue is that in my code behind file I am trying to put the values in a string:

strAllRecs2 = DropDownCategory.SelectedItem.Text
strState2 = DropDownState.SelectedItem.Text

I am getting the error "Name DropDownCategory is not declared" and Name 
DropDownState is not declared".  Withen the ID section of the dropdownlist boxes I have declred these names.  Why does the code behind file not recognize these names?
