Pulling data from SQL into session variables

Is there any easy way of doing this?  I'm using VB.NET.  I have the connection string and all of that jazz set up.  It's all working and I can print the SQL values, etc.  All I really want to do is pull a string value out of SQL table and store it in a session variable.  How do I do that?
