value on postback to indicate mode

hi i need to put a value that will survive postbacks in the cs of a page.
basicly im going to use the value to indicate which mode the page will be in ie add user with profile or not, the adding of the user has validation and the postbacks change a few things but if i had a value to indicate that i was adding a user i could control these things.
