I must be doing something stupid, because the smart mistakes I can find on the web. <grin>
I created a new page so the asp and the code behind were both connected correctly.
copied the text in the asp file (but not the header) to the new page; then copied the code behind from the old page to the new.
the new page is called custom.aspx
The header on the new page reads:
