Dynamically adding list items to a formview dropdownlist control

 Hi folks,
 So I have a formview control that contains a series of textboxes and dropdownlists.  The dropdownlists are populated dynamically from a SQL database.  What I want to do is have it so the dropdownlist also contains a value for adding a new item (in addition to the items from the database).  I can create the dropdownlist in the code behind so that the intended result is achieved, but don't know how to add it to the formview's insertitemtemplate so it will display correctly and utilize the built-in databinding features.  I was hoping it would be possible to add it directly in the .aspx document with an <asp:ListItem> tag, but so far have failed.  This is what I have so far.
