Okay here's what I need, I have a method on web service that performs a 3 minute operation.

as it's chugging, it adds it's current status to a log.

so in my aspx page, I basically need 1 thread that performs the web service operation, and another thread that, every couple seconds, grabs the latest entry from the log and displays it on a label to the user.  The web service method call has an " on completed " event, so when it completes, it forwards the ASP,net site to a different page.

here's what I have tried to no avail:

2 timers: 1 that invokes the web service, then stops, 1 that checks every 2 seconds. After some reading about update panels and post backs and 2 timers, I see that this wont work.

running the web service call on a separare thread, and keeping 1 timer control to show the status.  Throws an exception, I think it said a request like that ...
