Dynamically add custom controls

I am having trouble adding custom controls and getting the public properties, functions, and subs to work. I always get a "not set to an instance of an object" error when trying to put text into a textbox for example.
I first declare the control in the following form..

Public Shared WithEvents myControlName As New myControlThen when i wish to add the control, i do..
myControlName = New myControl
myControlName.id = "MyControlID"

myControlName.someSub() 'Problem here
myControlName.someProperty = someValue 'Problem here
