Extract textbox.text from template field in detailsview

What is the best way to pull a value out of
a textbox before an update within a detailsview?
The value is in a textbox within a template field.
For example, I tried doing this, but it doesn't work.

    protected void DetailsView1_ItemUpdating(object sender, DetailsViewUpdateEventArgs e)
    {
        DetailsViewRow selectedRow = DetailsView1.Rows[13];
        TableCell fldRemedyInc = selectedRow.Cells[1];
        String x = fldRemedyInc.Text;
    }

String x is given the value = "" instead of whatever the user types in the textbox.

I would like to test the value with and if/else before proceeding with the update,
but first I need the user input within the textbox.
